Hays man killed in crash

A Hays man was fatally injured and another was hurt Friday evening when the truck they were in crashed north of Lodge Pole.

Paul Michael Heck, 26, died while being airlifted to a Great Falls hospital, according to an obituary written by his wife, Delina Cuts The Rope.

The other man, Waylon Doney, 25, was hospitalized following the crash, the Montana Highway Patrol said this morning.

Benefis Healthcare said Doney has been discharged from the hospital.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, Heck and Doney were traveling south on Tribal Route 8 in a 1974 Ford pickup when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll, according to the Highway Patrol. Both men were ejected from the vehicle, said MHP officer Scott Waddell.

The wreck occurred about 13 miles north of Lodge Pole.

"We're not sure who the driver was," Waddell said. "It is still under investigation."

Route 8 is a paved road. Road conditions and weather were not factors in the accident, Waddell said, adding that the speed of the truck has not been determined.

Doney could not be reached for comment.
