ROY SHAW obituary

Roy Richard Shaw, 81, of Havre, a World War II veteran and retired furniture salesman, died of complications from a stroke Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at a Havre care facility.

A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Donaldson Hall Commons at MSU - Northern. Cremation has taken place.

Roy was born on Jan. 16, 1923, in Fairmount, N.D., to John and Anna (Kirchner) Shaw. He grew up and attended school in Fairmount and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1940.

During World War II he served as a sergeant and tank commander with the 774th Tank Battalion, 20th Armored Division. He was involved with the Battle of the

Bulge in Belgium and the Battle of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany.

After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Fairmount and married Delores Miller April 17, 1947.

The couple moved to Havre in 1948, where they raised their eight children. Roy was employed by Howard Brother's Furniture, then by Valley Furniture, and finally opened his own business, Riverside Furniture, in North Havre.

Roy was a member of the VFW, Elks Club, Moose Lodge, Ducks Unlimited, and Walleyes Unlimited. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed skiing and hunting, but he was best known for his love of fishing and spending time at his family cabin in the Bears Paw Mountains.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beatrice Knight.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Delores Shaw of Havre; daughters, Jody (Darrel) Lander, Jeanne Shaw and Jennifer (Noel) Henderson, all of Havre, and Julie Arnold of Great Falls; sons, John Shaw of Great Falls, Jeff Shaw of Spokane, Wash., Jamie (Stacy) Shaw of Farmington, Minn., and Jerry (Marci) Shaw of Fairfield; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Brunkhorst of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home of Havre, Montana.
