It was an interesting weekend of basketball across the Hi-Line.

Just when it looked like the North Star Knights were ready to challenge Big Sandy for the District 9C regular season title, the Knights dropped both of their games this weekend, while the Pioneers swept.

On Thursday night in Harlem, the Chinook Sugarbeeters stepped out of conference and renewed an old rivalry, as the Beeters defeated Harlem, 49-40.

Chinook trailed 21-19 at halftime, but a 19-11 run in the fourth quarter propelled the Beeters to victory.

Kassie Dugan scored a game-high 17 points to lead Chinook, and Leandra Thomas paced the Wildcats with 15 points.

In District 9C action on Thursday night the Rocky Boy Morning Stars picked up a tough win in Turner, 54-51.

Loni Belcourt scored 22 points to lead the Morning Stars, and Shaneen Raining Bird chipped in with 12. Cheryl Cowan led Turner with 19 points.

In Box Elder, the last-place Box Elder Bears narrowly missed upsetting Hays-Lodge Pole, but the Thunderbirds escaped with a 58-55 road victory.

Suzie Kirkaldie led three T-Birds in double-figures with 17 points. Carla Obie added 14 points, and Dianne Brockie scored 12. The Bears got 13 points from Latasha Wolfchild and 10 from Rokki Parker.

On Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters once gain were out of conference, this time falling to the No. 2-ranked Class B Malta M-ettes, 72-51.

Crystal Roseberry led the Beeters (6-8) with 18 points and she dished out seven assists. Kelly Pankratz led all scorers with 29 points.

The upset of the night came in Turner, where the Tornados knocked off North Star, 50-45.

Turner (5-8) started off hot, building a 25-18 lead in the first half. The Knights rallied late, but Turner held on to the slim victory.

Ashley VanVoast scored a game-high 22 points to lead Turner. Kelsey Klindworth chipped in with 13. The Knights were paced by Maia Aageson's 14 points. Megan Warren also scored 12 points.

In other 9C action on Friday night, Big Sandy kept its wining streak in tact with a 95-54 thrashing of Hays-Lodge Pole.

The Pioneers had five players score in double figures, led by Naomi Williams with 20 points. Kaci Herron scored 17 points and Jessica Amsbaugh added 14. Big Sandy also got 13 points from Shalayna Pearson and 12 from Laci Keller. The T-Birds were paced by Suzie Kirkaldie's 12 points.

In District 10C action the No. 2 Chester/J-I Hawks survived a scare from rival Valier, 68-64.

The Hawks led 38-29 at intermission, but had to hold off a furious Panther charge in the second half.

Mary DeVries led all scorers with 26 points, and the Hawks also got 12 points each from Brianne Wolfe and Hannah Pimley.

On Saturday night, Harlem pulled off a stunning 51-50 upset of Class C rival Rocky Boy on the Morning Stars home floor.

The game was close throughout, but the Wildcats took the lead late in the fourth quarter and Rocky Boy missed several chances to win the game at the end.

The Wildcats got 15 points apiece from Ida Mountain Chief and Leandra Thomas in the win. Rocky Boy (9-5) was led by Loni Belcourt's game-high 19 points.

The rest of the District 9C was either idle or in nonconference action on Saturday night.

Big Sandy survived a road trip to Geraldine, as the Pioneers (13-1) defeated the Tigers 61-37. And North Star dropped its second game in as many days, when the Knights (9-5) fell to Highwood, 46-37.

Meanwhile, in District 10C play, the Chester/J-I Hawks kept their undefeated season rolling along, but just barely.

The Hawks got their second stern test in a row, this time, edging Sunburst 51-47.

The upset-minded Refiners built a commanding 29-18 lead going into halftime. But Chester/J-I stormed back to outscore Sunburst 33-18 in the second half.

The Hawks were paced by Mary DeVries with 19 points and Hannah Pimley with 16 points.

Chester/J-I is still undefeated in Class C this season at a perfect 14-0, and the Hawks have all but clinched the District 10C regular season championship.
