As the regular season begins to wind down, many of the District 9C boy's basketball teams are desperately jockeying for position. And after North Star and Box Elder each grabbed conference wins this weekend, it's beginning to look more and more like a two-horse race.
Box Elder played host to Hays-Lodge Pole on Thursday night. The Bears, who have been playing well as of late, trailed by one point to the T-Birds at halftime in a high-scoring shootout, 43-42.
The game was tied heading into the fourth quarter at 65-65, when Box Elder closed the game by outscoring the T-Birds 26-19, and earning a 91-84 win.
Aaron Henry had another huge game for the Bears (6-3 conference, 11-3 overall) with a game-high 31 points. Cody McCabe notched 27 points for the T-Birds and Lance Brockie contributed with 16 points.
Rocky Boy paid a visit to the Turner Tornadoes on Thursday night and the Stars got a hard earned 57-53 victory, and their second district win of the season.
The Stars (2-7 conference, 4-10 overall) were led by Lakota Oats' 26 points. The Tornadoes got 19 points from Dalton Cornell in the loss.
Also, on Thursday the undefeated Harlem Wildcats traveled to Chinook to take on the Chinook Sugarbeeters. Chinook was not intimidated by the Wildcats and took an early 8-7 lead. Chinook continued to battle the Wildcats throughout and by slowing down the tempo and taking the air out of the basketball, the Beeters were able to take a 33-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.
However, the Wildcats found a way in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Beeters 13-7 down the stretch for a 41-40 win.
Rick Haluszka scored 12 points in the win for the Wildcats, who kept their unbeaten season intact. The Beeters were led by Marty Birky, who scored a game-high 14 points.
Big Sandy played host to Hays-Lodge Pole (3-6 conference, 6-8 overall) on Friday night and the Pioneers won a high-scoring affair over the T-Birds, 86-80.
Justin Willis exploded for 32 points in the Pioneer victory. Will Granados had a huge for the T-Birds as he scored an amazing 34 points in the losing effort.
Friday night also saw Chinook host Malta in a matchup of old class B rivals. The Beeters again came up short they fell to the Mustangs 62-57.
Dallas Miller led the way for the Beeters with 21 points.
On Saturday night, North Star looked to improve to 9-0 in district play as they went on the road to Turner to face the Tornadoes and the Knights did just that with a 52-42 victory.
Cody Donoven scored a game-high 19 points and Darius Wendland pitched in with 15 points for the Knights. Colin Jones led the Tornadoes (2-6 conference, 5-8 overall) with 14 points in the loss.
Big Sandy (4-5 conference 5-9 overall) also went on the road to take on Geraldine in nonconference action Saturday night and the Pioneers dropped another game, 70-62.
Chris LaBuda led the Pioneers by scoring 22 points in the losing effort.

Neeko Bigby led the Wildcats with 15 points and Jordan Mount contributed with 14 points in the win. Justin Ahenakew scored 18 points in the loss for the Stars.
Highwood paid a visit to North Star Saturday night and knocked off the Knights in a nonconference affair, 69-56. It was the Knights' first loss in the month of January.
Cody Donoven led the Knights (9-0 conference, 11-3 overall) with a game-high 24 points and Shane Rice pitched in with 10 points in the loss.
In District 10C action on Friday night, Chester/J-I went to Valier in search of a victory and the Hawks found what they were looking for with a 53-43 win over the host Panthers..
Kevin May scored 13 points in the win.
Saturday night C/J-I hosted Sunburst as they looked for a weekend sweep. However, the Hawks fell to the Refiners, 63-53.
