Sharing the road with pedestrians and bicyclists

Editor: Now that summer is upon us you can expect to see a large increase in pedestrians, bicyclists and children- at-play. Please take a moment to rethink your driving habits and remind yourself and those in your circle to be extra watchful when operating a motor vehicle.

A reminder to bicyclists: When riding upon a roadway, street or highway; you are subject to the same traffic regulations as a motor vehicle, such as stop signs, yield signs, right-of-way, etcetera.

Bicyclists can be cited for traffic violations as well.

A reminder to motor vehicle operators: A notable traffic violation in our city is "failure to yield right-of-way." There are no "through" streets in our city unless it is marked with a yield sign at that particular intersection. You must yield right-of-way to any and all traffic to your right at all uncontrolled intersections. Failure to yield right-of-way is the largest cause of traffic accidents.

Don't be too quick in assuming you can pass a stopped vehicle near an intersection. The vehicle ahead of you may have stopped for a pedestrian or other unseen circumstance.

Please be courteous to pedestrians when you see them waiting to cross a street.

Everyone's safety is first and foremost. Our patrol officers will be on the watch, and on patrol with police bicycles this summer to help ensure that we all have a safe and enjoyable summer.
