Havre High golfers show improvement

Just before the weather went south, the Havre High boys and girls golf teams got a chance to compete in the third tournament of the high school golf season.

On Friday, the Blue Ponies were in East Glacier for a tournament hosted by Browning. The East Glacier Course is a scenic nine-hole layout and the Ponies turned in some good scores on the day.

Havre had three top-ten players at the met, which featured Browning and several other area schools. Junior Simon McCann shot a season-best 87 to finish second overall on the boys side. Teammate Sam Lippy added a 94 to finish fifth overall. On the girls side, Rebekah Martin shot a 103 to finish fifth individually. The Pony boys finished second in the varsity teams scores.

"We played well this week," HHS first-year head coach Mackenzie Rodriguez said. "I am really proud of Simon McCann for taking second overall for individual score, and both Rebekah Martin and Sam Lippy took fifth for girls varsity and boys varsity, respectively."

Havre took a full team to East Glacier, and plenty of Blue Pony players got some much-needed experience on the course.

On the boys side, Thurman Holdsclaw carded a 105, Ramsey Drew a 104, David Denny a 107, Spencer Morkrid a 101, Jesse Lieberg a 139, Chase Stoltz a 163, Austin Christiansen a 141, Chance Pitkanen a 141 and Jacob Holden a solid 114.

Other Pony girls also turned in solid scores on Friday. Freshman Katie Beck looked good with a 113, Boston Swenson had a 134 and Samantha French added a 142. Dani Freidi shot a 164.

"Our JV players showed great promise as David Denny, Spenser Morkrid, Jesse Lieberg, Boston Swensen, Samantha French, and Katie Beck all shooting their lowest scores this season," Rodriguez said. "Hopefully, we can keep our improvement at a steady pace. This next week we go back to browning, so it will be exciting to see our improvement."

Havre is back at East Glacier on Saturday for the Browning Invitational.
