The low temperature that hit Havre today was minus 42 degrees, the coldest spot in the lower 48 states — but that low didn't set a record.

The Havre low for Monday was minus 35 recorded at 11:13 p.m., although the official report through 5 this morning listed Havre at minus 39.

Later in the morning Havre's temperature dropped to 42 below zero.

Those miss the record lows by several degrees.

The minus 35 recorded Monday compares to a record minus 43 degrees set on Jan. 31, 1893.

The low of 42 degrees below zero this morning compares to a record of minus 47 set on Feb. 1, 1887.

The record high for today goes to the other extreme. The high temperature in Havre on Feb. 1, 1992, was 65 degrees. 112 degrees warmer than the record cold temperature on that date.

Even the record cold for today's date falls short of others from this season.

The low temperature for Havre on Jan. 27, 1916, is listed at minus 57 degrees — with the record high for that date 112 degrees warmer in 1976 and 1988 at 55 degrees.

With the warm spell in north-central Montana before this week's cold snap, Havre came fairly close to the record high last Thursday. The high in Havre that day was 45 degrees, 92 degrees warmer than the low temperature today and 102 degrees warmer than the record for Jan. 27.
