Ponies race hard in Great Falls

The Havre High boys and girls swim teams wrapped up the 2011 portion of the high school swimming season with plenty of laps in the Great Falls High Pool over the weekend.

The Blue Ponies were in Great Falls for a four-team meet on Friday, then competed in the annual Great Falls Invitational All-Relay Meet on Saturday.

Friday was a good day for the Ponies as they took on Class AA powers CMR and Great Falls High, as well as Class A rival Hardin. In the meet, the Pony boys took an outstanding second with 118 points. GFH won the boys meet with 223 points, while Hardin was third and CMR was fourth. In the girls meet, HHS was third with 91 points, while CMR edged GFH for the girls championship.

The Pony boys made some major headway Friday via their relay teams. Havre won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:02.43. The winning team was composed of Evan Flathers, Desmond Fialkosky, Courtlan Vukasin and Taylor Riphenburg. Havre also finished third and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and fifth in the 400 free relay.

Individually, the Ponies got a pair of second-place finishes from Vukasin and Nick Rhines. Vukasin placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.61 and Rhines saw a fast 2:22.36 in the 200 free. Derek Van Dessel also shined in the 200, finishing fourth with a time of 2:39.49, and he came back to finish third in the grueling 500 free with a time of 7:14.29.

Flathers also doubled up for the Ponies. He finished third in the 50 free with a time of 25.05 and third in the 100 free with a time of 56.92. Vukasin added a sixth-place finish in the 50 and Riphenburg earned a sixth in the 100. Riphenburg went on to earn sixth in the 100 backstroke as well.

The Pony girls found success as well. Megan Obrecht won her third straight 100 breaststroke race of the year. She captured Friday's race in 1:15.20. Katie Johnson also had a big day for the HHS girls. Johnson finished third in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:39.41 and fourth in the 100 butterfly at 1:14.72.

The HHS relay teams also scored in all three events. The Ponies were third in the 200 medley with a time of 2:16.40, second in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.28 and fifth in the 400 free.

Saturday's meet was an all-relay event with almost all of Class AA, as well as Havre and Hardin in attendance. The Pony boys were strong, scoring 25 points to finish 10th overall, while the HHS girls scored two points.

Havre is now off until Jan. 6 when the Ponies travel to Hardin for the Class A Invite.
