Cattle back in Beaver Creek

With Labor Day over, a new attraction — or distraction — is back on Beaver Creek Park south of Havre, and officials are urging people to slow down and use caution.

Cattle are grazing on the park, and signs have been posted both to warn drivers of the livestock and notify them of the seasonal night-time speed limits.

In an effort to reduce the chance of car-cow crashes, during grazing season — the day after Labor Day through Dec. 31, generally — the night-time speed limit is 35 mph. The daytime limit — 55 mph on the state-maintained part of the highway, about to Taylor Road, and 45 mph on the county-maintained part south of that — remains the same.

The grazing, which allows ranchers purchase leases to allow their cattle to graze on the park, is overseen by a committee appointed by the Hill County Park Board.

The grazing leases are the single largest source of revenue on the park.
