News you can use
The golf season began early this year, with so much good weather in February, reports had people dusting off their clubs at both Beaver Creek Golf Course and Prairie Farms Golf Course well before winter ended.
And apparently, the early play has got people's games in order because there have already been three hole-on-one's reported in Havre this spring.
All three aces happened in the month of April, and they all occurred on the eighth hole at BCGC. Two of the aces were from back-nine tees, while one was from the straight away front nine.
Having played that hole from both tee boxes about 5,000 times in my life, I'm extremely jealous of all of the aces, yet I wish to offer my congrats to all three players who have already hit golf's holy grail this season.
Meanwhile, men's league play is also underway at both courses.
The second night of Thursday night men's league at BCGC saw Frank Henry fire a 37 for low gross, while Nick Turner netted a 28. Standard Nutrition is in first place heading into this Thursday with 46.5 points, followed by Independence Bank, PJ's Poker and Midtown Car Care.
The Prairie Farms' men have also got two weeks of league action in on both Tuesday and Wednesday night's, but no league scores have been reported at this point.
The women are gearing up to get going at Prairie Farms as well. The women's league will play a season-starting scramble on May 17, with the next Thursday being the first official night of league play.
It's also never too early to start planning tournament golf, and the first big event on the Prairie Farms docket is the Natalie Patrick Tournament, which will be held on June 16.
Being the first golf column of the season, I should also take this time to commend some great young golfers in Havre.
The Montana State University-Northern golf teams recently completed the 2012 Frontier Conference season at the Frontier Championships in Missoula. The Skylights finished in fourth place overall and knocked off Carroll College in the first round. The Northern men also did exceptionally well in their first season of college golf, placing fifth overall.
Congrats to all the Lights and Skylights golfers, and to head coach Dave Boles.
Note: The local golf report will normally run in every Tuesday's Havre Daily News sports section. If anyone would like to include information in the column, please e-mail to George Ferguson at [email protected] by the previous Sunday night.
