More winter still forecast in near future

With frigid temperatures still in the forecast, the light dusting of snow a storm dumped on the region Sunday is not likely to go away soon, and the region is expected to see more of the white stuff as the week progresses.

A storm with high winds, causing visibility problems in some parts of north-central Montana during the day, dropped some snow Sunday, with. 3 inches recorded at the Havre City-County Airport.

The temperature also dropped rapidly, with a low of minus 3 reported at the airport.

That follows an unusually warm and dry fall and early winter, with December's average for Havre 10 degrees above the norm for the month.

This week, National Weather Service is forecasting weather closer to normal for mid-January in the region, with forecast highs for Havre of 7 degrees Tuesday and 1-below-zero Wednesday, lows close to 10-below-zero and a chance of one-half to one inch of snow tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday, with the accumulation expected to increase to one to two inches by Wednesday night and Thursday.

The forecast calls for a warming trend — with highs in the teens to 20s by Friday and upper 20s through Sunday — and a continued chance of snow showers through Sunday, with lows in the teens.

AccuWeather.com is also predicting snow, showing 3.8 inches of snow on the way on its website listing for Havre, with even more extreme temperatures in its forecast.
