Hands on History set to roll again Saturday

The county museum funding foundation is looking for children who want to experience history — and people who would like to help them experience it — at its annual Hands on History fundraiser Saturday.

Children at the event at the Holiday Village Mall and its parking lot can experience egg candling, making ice cream, riding horses, cooking meat with stone boiling, panning for gold, having an old-fashioned tea in formal dress and more at this year's event.

Anna Brumley, manager of the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump which the H. Earl Clack Museum Foundation helps fund along with the Clack Memorial Museum, said 32 events were planned as of this morning, with local sponsorships paying to let children go through 14 of them free all day.

Brumley said that, for $250, businesses or individuals can sponsor the events.

"We do have quite a few individuals who step up, " she added.

Along with the activities, free entertainment is planned throughout the day, including Native American dancing, ballet dancing and a bagpipe performance.

Brumley said some of the favorites are the horse riding — which was not offered last year and was greatly missed — making candles; visiting the live poultry including chickens, ducks and possibly a turkey, this year; tooling leather; making dishes out of egg shells; writing with a quill pen; riding a velocipede or go-cart, and riding around the mall parking lot on a wagon loaded with hay bales.

The event is international, she added, with the branding demonstration done by a resident of Canada and silhouette portraits being made by Medicine Hat artist Jim Marshall, who made the Wahkpa Chu'gn mural displayed at Boot Hill Plaza on U. S. Highway 2 east of the mall.

Many of the events will be within the mall, while others — like the horse riding, a branding demonstration and stone boiling — will be in the parking lot. Brumley said people should check to see what the opportunities are outside, as well as walking through the mall.

The horse riding will take place in two corrals which Big R is setting up for the event.

"We couldn't do this without a lot of help, " Brumley said, adding, "We do need more volunteers. We are always short of volunteers. "

She said people who could stop by to help even for an hour or two would be a great help, including teenagers who would like to volunteer. Volunteers will be shown how to run the activities if necessary.

For more information about volunteering or about sponsoring events, people can contact Brumley at 265-6417, or 945-3503.

The event runs from 10 a. m. through 4 p. m. Saturday. Tickets for the activities, which take different numbers of tickets depending on the event, are three for $1, 33 for $10 or 70 for $20.
