North Stars get underway

It was cold, and windy, and it even flurried for a bit. But American Legion baseball still got underway Sunday afternoon in Havre.

h Stars opened their brand new season under frist-year head coach Dan Wirtzberger with one nine-inning game against the Lewistown Redbirds on Sunday at Legion Field. The Redbirds won 20-9, but the North Stars had only a few practices under their belt and were content to work on things and make sure everyone got ample playing time.

The Redbirds scored 20 runs on 17 hits and led 7-1 early on in the game. Havre's bats got going in the late innings three runs in the fifth inning, two more in the eight and two in the ninth.

Havre totaled six hits on the day with Mark Vukasin notching two of them. Thurman Holdsclaw and Chris Vukasin also had hits for the North Stars. Havre also used several pitchers in short work in Sunday's game. Brandon Smith started the game for the North Stars.

Havre will be back in action with a doubleheader this Sunday in Great Falls. The North Stars will take on the Great Falls Stallions in two seven-inning games Sunday in Great Falls. Havre's next home games are slated for May 9 when the North Stars host the Stallions in one, nine-inning game.
