The students of Havre probably don't want to think about how close the next school year is getting, but the local Salvation Army is.
According to the Salvation Army's Havre director Trina Crawford, it is time again for the Salvation Army's developing tradition of helping families and children in need get all of the school supplies they need, but might not be able to afford.
"When you have to come back to school, financially there's an awful lot that needs to be done, " Crawford said, about preparing for the Aug. 22 event.
The goal, since 2005, is to put a backpack full of supplies in the hands of children who might otherwise not be so prepared.
Last year they gave out 172 backpacks.
Crawford said they are partnering with Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods to ease the process; one $15 donation puts one backpack of supplies into a student's hands.
For people interested in more a la carte contributions, Crawford said donations can be dropped off at either the Salvation Army story downtown or the office next door.
Donations will be accepted until Aug. 21, the day before they are distributed.
Anyone who thinks they may be eligible for the program is encouraged to call the Salvation Army office at 265-6411, to set up an appointment.
Candidates will have to present proof of residence in Havre, proof of income, and identification for all members of the household.
That may seem like a lot, but the Salvation Army doesn't want people to abuse the generosity of people in Havre.
"I really appreciate this community of Havre because they are always so willing to give, " Crawford said. "It's a very giving community and I feel very fortunate to be working in a community like that. "
Crawford said the Salvation Army backpack program needs the following supplies:
