The Bar Association of the judicial district that includes Hill County has set up a series of discussions to inform people about legal issues ranging from estate planning to contract disputes, from custody and child support issues to basic criminal justice.
The day will close out with a presentation on the drug and DUI courts being established in the county.
Karla Mae Bosse, Hill County deputy attorney and president of the 12th Judicial District Bar Association, said the bar and local attorneys' offices are sponsoring the full day of presentations at the Havre-Hill County Library in commemoration of national Law Day.
"Law Day is an annual event, which was originally conceived in 1957 when American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes envisioned a special national day to mark our commitment to the rule of law, " Bosse said. "The following year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day. Law Day was made official in 1961 when Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day. "
The theme for Law Day this year is, "No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom. "
The hour-long presentations start Tuesday at the library at 9:15 a. m. with "landlord and tenant law, " followed at 10:30 a. m. with a presentation on laws covering divorces.
The next presentation, on custody, visitation and child support, starts at 11:45 a. m., followed at 1 p. m. with a presentation covering issues including wills, living wills and guardianships.
A presentation on citizens' rights and criminal justice issues follows at 2:15 p. m., and the topic of the next discussion at 3:30 p. m. is bankruptcy.
Small claims court and contract disputes follows at 4:45 p. m., and "Your Hill County Attorney's Office" is next at 6 p. m.
