Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

It was another busy week of girls basketball on the Hi-Line. And with the week in the books, area teams are one step closer the postseason.

Last Tuesday night, the fifth-ranked Box Elder Bears kept their perfect season going with a 73-57 District 9C win over North Star in Rudyard. The Bears have been on fire as of late and Tuesday was no exception. But North Star hung tough, only trailing 32-27 at half and 48-42 after three quarters. However, the Bears pounced in the fourth, scoring 25 points in the final eight minutes.

Five Bears reached double figures, led by Brandi Buffalo's 15 points. Aricka Wolf Chief and Jai Lynn Parker each scored 14. North Star got a game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds from Shelby Lipp, while Lisa Carlon scored 12 and Tylynn Rettig added nine.

On Thursday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters won the first of two games on the weekend when they crushed visiting Dodson 57-19. Taryn Norby, who recently signed to play for Montana State-Northern next season, scored 10 points, as did Makhayla Farmer.

Thursday night wasn't as good for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, who became the first of two area Class B squad to get belted by the powerful Malta M-Ette's last week. Malta beat the Morning Stars 68-17 at home. Tennae Singer scored seven points in the Rocky Boy loss.

It didn't take Rocky Boy long to bounce back though. On Friday night, the Morning Stars were at home and battered Shelby 52-34 in a District 1B matchup. Shelby led 23-21 at halftime, but Rocky Boy turned on the defense and held the Coyotes to just 13 points in the final 16 minutes.

Leigha Onco scored 15 points for the victorious Morning Stars. Sabrina Laforge added 12 and Leah Gopher chipped in with 11.

Chinook added another win on Friday night and it was a big one. The Beeters traveled to Hays where they dropped 9C rival Hays-Lodge Pole 50-39. Chinook led by just one going into the fourth quarter, but a 13-3 run finished the Thunderbirds off.

Norby poured in 22 points and Farmer added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Beeters. HLP was led by Kristie Runsabove with 13.

Box Elder stepped out of the 9C on Friday, traveling to Denton, but the Bears just kept on rolling. They defeated the Trojans 56-32 and closed the game on a 11-4 run.

Aricka Wolf Chief led with 19 points, while Brandi Buffalo added 12 points as Box Elder remained undefeated.

Friday night wasn't as good for the Big Sandy Pioneers, who lost to the powerful Winifred-Roy Red Raiders, 53-36 in Big Sandy. In the loss, the Pioneers got 15 points from Mateila Cline and 13 by Molly Herron.

Harlem stepped out of league play Friday and didn't have any luck either. The Wildcats went to Cut Bank and were downed 68-32 by the 1B Wolves. Tesche Ereaux scored 11 points for Harlem, while Monique Doney added eight in the loss.

Closing out Friday night was the seventh-ranked Chester/J-I Hawks, who had no trouble with rival Valier. The Hawks crushed the Panthers 489-18 at home as Valier struggled to solve the C/J-I defense all night.

Jenni Ghekiere scored 13 points and Nikole Wolfe helped out with 12 in the easy 10C win.

The Hawks then turned their attention to another rival, Dutton-Brady Saturday in Dutton. And it was the same result as C/J-I won 41-27. The Hawks led 26-12 at halftime and the Diamondbacks couldn't mount a second-half comeback.

Stina Haaland was the catalyst, scoring 16 points for C/J-I. Kate Graff chipped in with seven as the Hawks remained unbeaten in league play.

North Star and HLP played a 9C barn burner on Saturday in Hays, and the Knights came away with a much-needed 50-47. North Star led 24-18 at half, but the T-Birds roared back to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. The game was nip and tuck from there, but North Star scored the final points to hold on.

Shelby Lipp paced the Knights with 17 points and Lisa Carlon added 16. The T-Birds got a game-high 19 from Kristie Runsabove.

As noted, Malta crushed to Hi-Line teams this week, with the second being Harlem. On Saturday night, the M-Ette's trounced the Wildcats 62-18 in Harlem. Kasey Ramone was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with five points.
