Our View: Think about a run for City Council

Havre faces some serious questions in coming years.

People always say that this is the most critical time in history, but there is a case to be made that the decisions made in coming years will affect our city for the next century.

Taxes, infrastructure repairs, business and industrial development, and tourism promotion are just a few of the many programs that will have to be undertaken.

The mayor and four — maybe five — of the city councilmembers who will lead the city through the troubled waters will be chosen in the fall election.

If the recent past is any indication, there won't be a massive line of potential candidates for these posts. That's too bad.

It would be great if voters had a choice of directions when they go to the polls in November.

And it would be great if we ended up with a diverse group of people on city council — young, old, male, female, political newcomers and veterans — to make the decisions about our future.

It won't be long before candidates will be able to declare candidacies for the council. It's a simple process.

Democratic and Republican leaders are already looking to fill their tickets.

Hopefully lots of people will consider running in order to pay back to the community that has been so good to so many of us.

If you are looking for an endless font of praise, if you want a high-paying job with few headaches, don't consider a run for council.

But if you are willing to roll up your sleeves, take your punches, pitch in and do the dirty work and end the day with a real sense of accomplishment, think about taking the political plunge.

Havre is a great place that needs some leadership at a key time.

Maybe this is the way for you to pay back. Think about it.
