Vernie (Brisbo) Main

Vernie Main, 81, of Harlem passed away on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Northern Montana Care Center of natural causes.

Wake services will begin at 5 p. m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at the Main Family Residence in Big Warm, Mont. Rosary services will be held at 7 p. m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at the Chief Nosey Center in Lodge Pole. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the Chief Nosey Center in Lodge Pole with Father Joseph Retzel officiating. Burial will follow in the Main Family Cemetery in Big Warm. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Vernie was born on Feb. 21, 1931, in Big Warm to William and Annie (WhiteCow) Brisbo. She was raised in Big Warm with her 12 siblings, attending Lodge Pole Elementary and Flandreau Indian Schools. On Feb. 15, 1952, she married James J. Main in Butte, Mont., and their union was blessed with seven children. The couple made their home in Butte for nine years before returning to the Fort Belknap area, first Hays and then Big Warm, where they lived until James passed in January 2009. Vernie worked over the years as a waitress and police dispatcher, but most of all as a wife, mother and homemaker. She loved watching all aspects of mother nature, collecting knickknacks, pictures, and traditional cooking and, most of all, caring for her family.

Vernie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Jimmy Main; her parents William and Annie Brisbo; her sons, Michael Edwin Main, Oliver Main and Michael Vernon Main; her granddaughters, Vernie Mae Main and Michelle Rae Main; her sisters Jeannette Brisbo, Delores Healy, Theresa Brisbo, Inez Bagley, Shirley Brisbo and Gertie Brisbo; her brothers, William Brisbo II, twins Edward and Edwin Brisbo, Eddie Brisbo, Oliver Brisbo and Richard Brisbo; and her adopted sisters, Catherine LongKnife Ereaux and Ella LongKnife Moore.

She is survived by her only daughter Rose M. "Sugie" (Ray Quincy) Main of Hays; her sons, Harold J. "Jiggs" (Rosie) Main of Fort Belknap, Douglas D. "Tiny" Main of Havre, William T. "Snuffy" (Dianna) Main of Fort Belknap, James J. Main Jr. of Shelby and Anthony Main of Big Warm; her sister Ruth Winchell of Billings, Mont. ; her special granddaughter, Lena (Quacey Whitegrass) Main; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous members of her extended and adopted family.
