BILLINGS - If the goal was to build as big a lead as they could, especially by way of pins and bonus points, the Havre Blue Pony wrestling team accomplished that mission Friday at the Class A state wrestling tournament. The Blue Ponies finished day one inside the Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark with 129.5 points, easily good enough for first place. Havre also pushed nine wrestlers into Saturday morning's semifinals, while 15 of 17 Ponies remain alive in the tournament.

Havre won 12 first round matches Friday morning, and all but one was by pin. Those bonus points were big, and Havre only seemed to get better as the day went on. In Friday's quarterfinals, Keegan Kennelly (98), Grayson Brenna (105), Logan Pleninger (105), Dylan Stewart (112), Thomas Gruber (130), Kody Pribyl (145), Grant Pattison (189), AND Tyler Adams and Travis Adams both at 215 pounds all won for the second time and will wrestle in the semifinals Saturday morning. All nine Ponies still have a chance to capture individuals tate titles. Kennelly, Pleninger, Pribyl and Travis Adams are all freshman wrestling in their first state tournament.
In the quarterfinals, Havre's Gilbert Bara (135), Jake Williams (171) and Jace Billy (189) were all beaten, but bounced back Saturday night to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Also alive for HHS is heavyweight Dustin Odegard and 160-pounders JT Belcourt and Jason Kohler, all of whom lost in the first round but won two straight matches to follow.

Havre has yet to trail at any point in the tournament, and after a huge first day, the Ponies lead second-place Sidney, which scored 95 points. Columbia Falls and Glendive are tied for third at 85 points, while Belgrade and Hardin are tied for fifth with 79 points. Defending Class A champion Corvallis is next with 64.5 points.
Saturday's semifinals get underway at 9:30 a.m. The third-round consolation matches will also run at the same time. Following will be the consolation semifinals, then consolation finals. The finals are set to begin at 4 p.m. The Havre Daily News will again have live updates all day Saturday online, as well as at Twitter.
