Havre High boys trounce Conrad on the road

The Havre High boys basketball team has had their share of streaky play this season.

But after a great second half in their one weekend matchup, hopefully things will start to remain a little more consistent. Friday the Central A Blue Ponies were in Conrad, facing the Class B Conrad Cowboys in non conference basketball action. The Ponies defeated the Cowboys 57-39.

The first half didn't impress anybody, as both teams struggled to do anything to gain an edge.

Conrad held a 6-4 lead through the first eight minutes. And things didn't get any better offensively for the Ponies, or Cowboys, as both teams added seven more points in the second quarter.

But in the second half, things turned around for the Ponies.

Assistant coach Jared Weigel said it was possibly the best two quarters the Ponies have put together all season. The Pony defense still limited the Cowboys to 26 second half points, while the offense played very well, playing together, and playing unselfishly. HHS scored 23 points in the third quarter and 23 points in the fourth quarter, jumping all over the Cowboys and earning a 18-point victory.

The Ponies have been on the verge of taking their offense to the next level for some time, and coaches and players are hoping this was the turning points. Coach Weigel said the Ponies were making the extra pass and finding the open shot during the impressive second half. If the Ponies can keep that momentum moving forward, the could enter the divisional basketball tournament playing very well.

Kade Rismon led the Ponies with 20 points, while Dane Warp did his part with 19 of his own. Thurman Holdsclaw also had a great game in his return, grabbing a handful of key rebounds, as well as chipping in 10 points. Jace Kato and Ramsey Drew both scored three-points and Nate Rismon scored two.

Havre has just one game left this season, a home meeting with the conference rival Browning Indians. The Ponies will host the Indians on Saturday at the Havre Central Gym in Havre.
