Our view: Stop the racist nonsense

Once again, Montana is getting nationwide attention because of a some racist yahoos.

Montana has its share of these people, though we suspect strongly that there are no more here than most other states,

But the nutcakes here seem to have a real penchant for publicity.

The most recent incident involved a photo of an "Obama trap." It showed a watermelon beneath a box held up by a stick.

The photo was posted on the Facebook page of Jennifer Olsen, the chair of the Yellowstone County Republican Party.

Olsen denied she posted the photo, and the party is investigating to see if she is responsible.

We certainly hope that Olsen is not to blame for this nonsense, and we've been uplifted by the quick response of the Yellowstone County GOP.

But the photo and the story have gone viral. Blogs all over Montana have posted a story on the incident.

Earlier incidents have been reported in CNN, The Associated Press and the Huffington Post.

This story ended up on dailykoss.com, a widely read liberal-oriented website.

Someone thought this disgusting racist photo to be a hilarious joke, and that is disturbing.

The ultimate solution to the problem of recurring racism is for good Montanans of all sorts — that's the overwhelming majority of us — to stand up to this ridiculousness.

It's time to bring this to a halt.
