The last weekend in January was a critical one for many local high school girls basketball teams. And with district tournaments a mere two weeks away, every game from the her eon it is huge.
The week began early for several local teams, as Tuesday night saw the Hays-Lodge Pole girls bounce the Turner Tornadoes 65-44 in Hays. The T-Birds were led by 21 points from Pauline Siers, while the Tornadoes got 16 points from Ella Billmeyer.

Tuesday night also saw the Rocky Boy Morning Stars edge the Conrad Cowgirls 55-54 in Rocky Boy. The Morning Stars led by double figures with eight minutes to go, but had to hold off a furious Conrad run in the final minutes for the District 1B win.
Jay-Lynn Day Child paced Rocky Boy with 17 points, while Brandi Buffalo and Catlyn Gamble each scored 12.
The Morning Stars didn't find the same success on Thursday night as they were beaten by the powerful Malta M-Ettes 49-36 in Malta. Rocky Boy jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the first quarter, but the M-Ettes' 17-6 run in the third was enough to pull away.

Jay-Lynn Day Child paced the Morning Stars once again, scoring eight points, as did Leigha Onco, who also chipped in with eight.
Thursday night saw the North Star Knights' recent winning streak remain intact as they beat Denton 40-29. Bettie Carlon led the way for North Star with 14 points, while Lisa Carlon added eight.
Turner lost its second game of the week Thursday as the Tornadoes fell at home to Hinsdale, 45-26. Turner failed to score in the first eight minutes, and though the Tornadoes played better the rest of the way, they just couldn't catch up. Ella Billmeyer scored 10 points to lead Turner, while Lyndsay Hutton scored eight.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up a key 9C win Friday night, beating HLP 46-34 in Chinook. Chinook led 18-11 at halftime, and the Beeters never looked back.
In the loss, HLP's Shakayla Whitecow poured in a game-high 22 points, while Emily Dennis scored 17 to lead the Beeters.
In 10-C play Friday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks kept their stranglehold on the league standings by turning away the Valier Panthers, 50-46 in Valier. The Panthers out-scored the Hawks 30-24 in the second half, but C/J-I's 10-point halftime lead proved to be enough.
Denerey Haaland scored 17 points and Cailtin Vinson added nine to pace the Hawks in the win.
Rocky Boy got back on track Friday night with a 1B win over the Shelby Coyotes. Playing at home, the Morning Stars thumped the Coyotes 46-28. Jay-Lynn Day Child paved the way for the Morning Stars with 16 points, while Brandi Buffalo added nine.
Friday night didn't go as well for the Big Sandy Pioneers, who were beaten by 7C powerhouse Roy-Winifred, 44-37. In Big Sandy, the Outlaws raced out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter, and though the Pioneers picked up the pace the rest of the way, they couldn't come all the way back.

Leela Engle and Mateila Cline each scored nine points for Big Sandy, while Kaylie Gilman posted seven.
The Pioneers quickly turned things around on Saturday night as they clobbered Turner 66-25 in Turner. The Pioneers out-scored the Tornadoes 33-12 in the first half on their way to the 9C victory.
Molly Herron poured in a game-high 20 points for Big Sandy, while Shelby Gasvoda scored 12 and Gilman added nine. Turner got seven points by Shania Maloney in the loss.
The North Star Knights also grabbed a convincing 9C win Saturday night. In Gildford, the Knights beat HLP 66-32. Tylynn Rettig posted a game-high 17 points for the red-hot Knights, while Greyson Spicher totaled 10. HLP got 10 points from Pauline Siers in the losing effort.
Box Elder and Chinook also found the win column in non-conference games Saturday night.

In Dodson, the Beeters won easily, 67-27. Brooke Nicholson scored 14 points, Makhayla Farmer added 13 and Tavin Schneider scored 10 for the Beeters.
In Box Elder, the Bears downed Denton 47-38 behind a sizzling 20 points from Rebecca Rossette.
Meanwhile, in 10C action Saturday, the C/J-I Hawks kept on rolling. Playing at home, the Hawks throttled Dutton-Brady 50-18. Haley Harmon scored 12 points to lead the Hawks, while Caitlin Vinson scored 11 and Brittnee Theel added 10 in the win.
In Class 2B action Saturday night, the Harlem Wildcats were doubled up by Malta, 60-30. In the loss, Kaycee Ramone scored eight points from the Wildcats.
