Postseason approaching for area spikers
One week is all that stands between area high school volleyball teams and postseason play. So that made last week a big one along the Hi-Line.
The North Star Knights got last week started off on the right foot by beating arch rival Sunburst by scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-15 in a non-conference match last Tuesday. Paij Peterson had 19 assists and Lily Pedersen and Peytan King each tallied nine kills for the Knights.
North Star followed that win up with a dominant performance against Big Sandy Thursday night. The Knights swept the Pioneers by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-13 in a District 6C East match.
King tallied seven kills for the Knights, to go with three blocks, while Kate Hansen had 10 assists. Big Sandy got five kills each by Dakota Terry and Jaylyn Cline, while Andrea Rutledge had a pair of digs.
In another important 6C East match Thursday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were never threatened at rival Chester-Joplin-Inverness. The undefeated Beeters beat the Hawks by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-23 to remain perfect in district play. Taylor Neibauer had nine kills and eight blocks for Chinook, while Kimberlie Ghekiere had a match-high 11 kills to go with three blocks. CJI also got four aces from Kylee Vinson.
Though it wasn’t a conference match, the improving Box Elder Bears scored a big win Thursday night when they beat Class B rival Rocky Boy in Rocky Boy. Box Elder won by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 25-14 and 25-22. Tia Russell led the way with six kills, one block and 28 assists for the Bears. The Morning Stars were led by Tessa Big Knife with five kills and a block, while Kristy Parker had five aces.
In other Class B action Thursday, Harlem was throttled in a 2B match against Glasgow, as the Scotties beat the Wildcats by scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-6. Heaven Boushie had seven digs in the loss.
The local action heated up again Saturday, and in Chinook, the Beeters just kept on rolling. Chinook thumped visiting Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-19, 25-10 and 25-6. Kourtney Hanson had five kills and Sierra Swank finished with seven aces and seven digs.
Box Elder also remained hot with a five-set win over Geraldine-Highwood. In a thriller, the Bears bested the Rivals by scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-10. Lillian Gopher tallied five kills and Eve The Boy had four aces in the win.
In a non-conference match, CJI also won a five-setter Saturday. Against an old rival, the Valier Panthers, the Hawks won by scores of 23-25, 25-7, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-5. Kimberlie Ghekiere had 14 kills and Peyton Hawks had 37 assists and nine aces for CJI.
Big Sandy wasn’t as fortunate. On Saturday, the Pioneers fell to Northern C powerhouse Belt by scores of 25-8, 25-8 and 25-10. Jenna Leader had four kills, three digs and a block for the Pioneers.
