Amanda Schaub of Havre has called out to people interested in starting out in agriculture to shoot for a national program aimed at helping people move into the industry.

Schaub completed the National Farmers Union Beginning Farmers Institute in San Diego, California, graduating March 5.

"Applications for the 2017-18 class are now being accepted, and I encourage all to apply," Schaub said. "It has been an amazing experience that has opened my eyes to the many different facets of the ag community."

Participants for the BFI group are selected through a nationwide application process, with this year's application deadline March 30.

Selected participants meet three times over the course of a year in various locations across the country.

"This year we were in Washington, D.C., Salinas, California, and San Diego Californai," Schaub said. "We toured farms of all sizes and discussed such topics as farm succession planning, financing, insurance, risk management and marketing."

Schaub said this year's BFI program was the largest class yet with 17 members, two of whom, including herself, were from Montana.

Applications for the next institute are available online at nfu.org/education/beginning-farmer-institute.
