HHS tennis teams shine Conrad

The Havre High tennis teams had to wait an extra week, but they finally got their regular season started. Saturday, the Blue Ponies took part in the Conrad Invitational, where they dueled host Conrad, as well as Cut Bank, Lewistown and Choteau.

And HHS head coach George Ferguson said, the day was exactly what the Ponies needed.

“It was a really good day,” Ferguson said. “The weather was great, and we were able to play a lot of competitive tennis matches, which is what we were really needing. Our kids did a great job, too. Our older kids played really well, and we took a lot of freshmen down there as well, and got them their first matches, so that was great. It was a really productive day.”

Ferguson also noted that, he was looking more to see how his kids played rather than how many matches they won, but the Ponies did do plenty of winning, too.

On the girls side, Havre beat rival Lewistown 3-1, while tying Conrad and Choteau, 3-3. Cut Bank also edged the Ponies 4-2. Havre was missing several varsity players, but the Ponies did get standout doubles performances from Kadyn and Cassidy Acor and Teagan Fee and Tiffany Ralph, while senior Devyn Solomon was strong in singles, as were sophomores Tamera O’Leary and Sylvia Wilting.

The Havre boys meanwhile, beat Cut Bank and Conrad, 4-2, tied Lewistown 3-3 and played one match against Choteau. Havre’s Jake Huston and Reese Bulkley and Tommy Brown and Trenton Maloughney were each 2-0 in doubles, while Josh Warp was 2-1 at No. 1 singles.

“Our kids played really well for where we’re at in the season,” Ferguson said. “There was rust, and that’s to be expected right now. But I saw a lot of really good tennis from our kids, and I was really excited about all of our freshmen and sophomores and the way they played and learned throughout the day. It was a great experience for them.

“We’re just scratching the surface right now,” he continued. “So to that end, Saturday was a perfect jumping off point. All of our kids did a great job, and most importantly, they played really hard and competed hard every second they were on the court. So I think we got everything we need out of Conrad, and now we have things we can build off of going forward.”

Moving forward, it’s a big week for the Blue Ponies, who will dual Class A rivals Belgrade and Hardin Friday at home and then host the 2019 Havre Invitational on Saturday.
