Local Golf Report: MSU-N golf wraps up its season

From Tee to Green

In the spring, the Montana State University-Northern golf teams get just one chance to compete. And yet, that one chance is also the biggest tournament of every season.

The Lights and Skylights were in the desert last week for the 2019 Frontier Conference Championships, which was played at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix.

The Northern men were led by junior Devin Bray who fired a final-round 75 to vault himself into a fifth-place finish, and Frontier All-Conference honors for the season. Bray, who was also named Academic All-Conference in both golf and basketball this season, finished with a three-day total of 277 to lead the Lights. Caulin Bakalarski also shot a 75 on the final day of the tournament, while junior Jerod Boles shot 89, and finished the event with rounds of 84, 88 and 89.

Also competing for the Lights was Kyle Vanderacre, who shot 90 on the final day, and T.J. Reynolds, who posted a 95 on the final day of the tournament, which was won by Rocky Mountain College with a 903 team score. Montana Tech, which was led by Shawn Benson’s first-place finish, took second, while Lewis-Clark State was third, Providence was fourth, Carroll College finished fifth and the Lights took sixth with a team score of 1,106.

The Northern women were once again led by senior Jenna Jensen, who shot rounds of 84, 96 and 89 to place 13th overall. On the final day of the 54-hole women’s tournament. Megan Vanderacre shot 91, Tiara Gilham finished at 103 and Carrie Hofer shot 109.

The Skylights wound up in sixth place with a 1,201 team score. Rocky Mountain won the tournament with a 968, followed by LC State in second, Montana Tech in third, Carroll in fourth and Providence in fifth.

Meanwhile, on the home front, this week marks the start of men's league golf both at Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek Golf Course. The action starts tonight and Wednesday at Prairie Farms, while BCGC's men's league will once again be on Thursday nights.

League secretaries are reminded to send me weekly results by Sunday night following each week of league. We are looking for low gross, low net winners, and high teams for the night.
