Northern men face daunting third meetings at Carroll, Providence
Life on the road in the Frontier Conference is always tough. It's especially tough when things aren't going your way though.
And that's what the Montana State University-Northern Lights are facing as they travel to No. 12 Carroll College tonight, and arch rival Providence Saturday. Playing at both places are tough, and the Lights (4-6, 16-9) are doing so trying to snap a three-game losing streak, all the while missing key players with injuries.
"Yes it does certainly feel like we can't catch a break right now, but that's sports," Northern head coach Shawn Huse said. "Sometimes things you can't control just happen. We just need to keep working and know that everyone has their challenges as the season rolls along. We know what we are capable of and just need to keep fighting."
The Lights will keep battling, especially when they have seniors Mascio McCadney and David Harris, who combined for almost 40 points per game, leading the way. But the road trip will be daunting.
Carroll (8-2, 22-3), has been really good this season. Led by double-double star Jovan Sljivancanin, who averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game, and star point guard Shamrock Campbell, the Saints have won twice against Northern this season and are locked in a tight battle with Montana Tech for first place in the Frontier.
On the other end of the spectrum is Providence. The Argos (2-8, 11-12) are suffering through a difficult season. In last place in the league, UP has lost four straight and has already been blown out by the Lights twice this season.
Still, the Argos have the league';s leading scorer in Marcus Stephens, who averages 21 points per outing, as well as transfer Brendan Howard on their side, so Saturday's game will be no easy affair for Northern.
"Carroll and Providence are certainly no exceptions in terms of tough conference opponents," Huse said. "Each team plays a little different style, but both have plenty of weapons. And they can give you fits in different ways with their defenses."
Tonight's game between Northern and Carroll begins at 7 in Helena. The Lights meet the Argos Saturday at 4 p.m. in Great Falls. Northern is home next week to host Rocky Mountain College and Western.
