Archers only have a month to get practiced up for the Bearpaw Bowmen Archery Club's Spring 3D Archery Shoot, which is set for Sunday, May 1, at Eagles Campground in Beaver Creek Park.
Registration opens at 8 a.m., but archers can sign up at any point in the day as long as they make it through the course and turn in their score cards by 3 p.m. The competition is open to everyone, with all types of bows allowed, though rangefinders are prohibited.
People are also advised to come dressed for whatever the weather is that day because the shoot is a go no matter what Montana decides to throw out that day.
The course consists of 25 life-sized animal targets in a variety of sizes from the archery club's collection, from small rabbits to big game and even a Sasquatch, arrayed on a hiking trail around Eagles Campground. And the shooting distances will be anywhere from 3 feet to 70 yards.
This shoot is the precursor to the club's annual Barber Ranch 2-Day Archery Shoot, which is set for June 18-19 this year.
The 3D shoots have a mix of amateur archers, hunters and other archers who are into it for the competition, though the professional level archers are more likely to attend the two-day archery shoot in June, which can bring in as many as 500 competitors from across Montana, surrounding states and Canada.
The Spring 3D Archery Shoot will have targets at different distances set for traditional and compound bows, and for the youngest archers.
The competition is broken into three age groups of 12 and under, 13-17 and adults, 18 and older, and they can enter in any of six categories.
Two of the categories are for traditional bows - Longbow and Recurve. The other four categories - Freestyle, Unlimited, Limited and Bare-bow - are for compound bows, and the divisions are set according to how many aids, such as sights, pins, releases and compensators, are allowed from Freestyle, where anything goes, to Bare-bow, which doesn't even allow sights or releases.
Registration for the competition, which is open to all archers, begins at 8 a.m., and all shooting will be done by 3 p.m.
Concessions will be available onsite, and the organizers will be following whatever the current COVID-19 restrictions are at the time of the shoot.
