Big Sandy, CJI continue state-title quest in the Six-Man playoffs

The Six-Man football playoffs return this weekend after an exciting start to the postseason last weekend. From the Hi-Line, Big Sandy and Chester-Joplin-Inverness will compete in the quarterfinals after winning last weekend to start the postseason.

This Saturday, the Big Sandy Pioneers will continue their quest for a state title with a game at home against Custer-Hysham-Melstone. The Pioneers have been one of the best teams in six-man football this season with a 9-0 record in the regular season to earn the postseason's Northern No. 1 seed. To start the playoffs, Big Sandy defeated Savage 61-6 at home to advance to the quarterfinals.

Custer-Hysham-Melstone is the Southern No. 2 seed after going 7-2 in the regular season. After a loss to open the season, the Rebels won seven games in a row by an average margin of victory of 44.7 points a game. Despite losing, 59-26, to Broadview-Lavina in the regular season finale, the Rebels responded with a 63-12 win over Highwood on the road to start the playoffs.

The CJI Hawks will compete in the quarterfinals this Saturday at home with a game against Bridger. The CJI Hawks are the Central No. 3 seed in the postseason after going 6-2 in the regular season. Last weekend on the road, the Hawks survived a double-overtime thriller for a 55-54 win over Hot Springs to advance in the tournament.

Bridger should be a tough opponent as the Southern No. 3 seed in the postseason. The Scouts had a strong season with a 7-2 during the regular season. When the Scouts got on a roll, they averaged 56.6 points a game in their victories. Last weekend, Bridger defeated Richey-Lambert, 44-6, on the road to begin the postseason.

If Big Sandy and CJI both win this weekend, they would face one another in a playoff game next weekend. Heading into this weekend, Big Sandy should be favored to win and advance to the semifinals once again. CJI has a tougher road ahead, but it has the offense to go on a run. Either way, it should be another exciting slate of Six-Man football as these teams compete for a state championship.

Big Sandy will play Custer-Hysham-Melstone in Big Sandy this Saturday at 1 p.m. CJI will play at the same time against Bridger in Chester.
