Lights rack up wins at Battle of the Rockies

Not too far from home, the Montana State University-Northern Lights had a big weekend.

Wrestling in Great Falls, the Lights competed in the Argo Duals Friday and the Battle of the Rockies Open Saturday, hosted by the University of Providence. In the tournament, Northern was absolutely dominant, placing a tournament-high 15 wrestlers.

The Lights also crowned a trio of champions in Great Falls, as Martin Wilkie won the title at 149 pounds, and NaKoda Siegel beat teammate Rylin Burns in the 174-pound championship match, while Carl Hansen won the 197-pound title. Devin Crawford also placed second at 165 pounds for the Lights, scoring a mountain of team points, though official scores were not kept in the tournament which featured the Argos, Dickinson State, Oregon State, North Idaho and several others. Cooper Cook also reached the finals as well, finishing second at 133.

The Lights’ depth really showed in Great Falls, too.

In the lower weights, Tanner Cook placed fifth at 125 pounds, while Brennon McDermott took fifth at 133, Colin Silverthorn was fifth at 141, and Gavin MacLean took fourth at 157.

In the upper weights, the Lights were equally as good. Zach Valdez took fourth at 165 pounds, Reece White was sixth at 184, Austin Vanek was third at 184, Shane Mattson was fourth at 185 and Rylan Moldenhauer was third at 185.

The Lights were just as good Friday in their dual against Snow College, which Northern won 46-6. In the dual, Northern got pins from Silverthorn, Georgino Moraga (149), Crawford and Vanek, while McDermott, Connor Harris and Burns also won by bonus points.

The Lights will now look to build on their dominant performance in Great Falls, as they get set to head west next week. Northern will face Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon, Dec. 14, followed by duals against St. Ambrose and Eastern Oregon in Reno, Nevada. MSU-N then concludes the 2022 portion of the schedule at the Reno T.O.C. Dec. 18.
