Blue Ponies take third at Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic

With the postseason just around the corner, the Havre High wrestling teams looked to do well at a pair of tournaments in Missoula this past weekend. There was tough competition, but the HHS boys wrestling team finished third at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic while the HHS girls wrestling team finished fifth at the Missoula Hellgate Girls Wrestling Tournament.

“I thought we wrestled very well and put together a total team effort,” HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said. “To finish on top of the Class A field and then just all the other good AA schools that were there and the teams from out of state, it’s a heck of an accomplishment. It’s been a while since we brought back a team trophy from Missoula.”

At the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic, the Blue Ponies scored 159.5 total points as a team to finish third. A pair of AA schools finished ahead of them as Flathead scored 233.0 points to win the tournament while Billings West finished second. Over the weekend, several Ponies wrestled well for the team to take home a trophy.

Wrestling in the 126-pound weight class, Reed Mantle finished first. He started the tournament with a pin 37 seconds into his match against Grady Winston from Butte. Mantle then pinned Kyle Vermillion from Missoula Sentinel. In the quarterfinal, Mantle pinned Gallatin’s Isaiah Christensen in the third period.

In the semifinals, Mantle won in a sudden victory against Taylor Daines from University High. In the first-place match, Mantle won by injury default against Colten Gutenberger from Belgrade.

“Reed put together a really good weekend,” LaSalle said. “He wrestled with confidence every match and you can just see his confidence build throughout the tournament, so I think he’s on the right track coming into the last part of the season.”

At 182 pounds, Kale Van Campen finished second for the Ponies. He started the tournament by taking a 17-1 lead for a technical fall against Libby’s Matthew Niemi. Van Campen then won, 6-0, for a decision over Jimmy Dees from Powell. In the semifinal, Van Campen won, 10-0, for a major decision against Brandon Role from Columbia Falls.

Tristian Stygles took fourth wrestling at 138 pounds. He started his run with a pin against Jaxon Wolff from Glacier. In a consolation match, Stygles won a 7-2 decision against Chris Rathjen from Columbia Falls. Stygles then pinned Libby’s Zekiah Meyers. In the consolation semifinals, Stygles won an 8-4 decision over Jace Komac from Great Falls.

At 113 pounds, Matt Lemer finished fifth for the Ponies. He started the tournament with a pin against Prestin Connoly from Browning. In the quarterfinal, Lemer won a 10-4 decision against Garrett Bosch from Glacier. In the fifth-place match, Lemer won by forfeit against Bosch.

Reinhard Bold finished seventh wrestling at 145 pounds. In a consolation match, Bold won a 9-2 decision against Kameron Amende from Gallatin. In another pair of consolation matches, Bold pinned Daniel Peterson from Polson and Ethan Jarrett from Great Falls CMR. In the seventh-place match, Bold won a 7-1 decision against Dash Nugent from Billings West.

At 170 pounds, Pierce Caplette finished eighth in the tournament. In his first two consolation matches, Caplette pinned Wallace Baldwin from Belgrade and Ryan Sulpizio from University High. Caplette then won a 7-5 decision against Rowdy Crump from Columbia Falls.

Tommy Lewis also finished eighth in the tournament as he wrestled at 285 pounds. He started the tournament with a pin 38 seconds into his match against Jayden Friesen from Missoula Hellgate. Then in a pair of consolation matches, Lewis pinned Tarrance Toavs from Columbia Falls and Markus Fetcho from Mead. Lewis then won a 3-0 decision against Brayden Wallace from Missoula Sentinel.

In the Missoula Hellgate Girls Tournament, the Ponies finished fifth with 113.0 total points. Butte won the tournament with 166.5 total points while Flathead finished second and Ronan took third. On Saturday, many girl wrestlers had strong performances for the Ponies.

Clara Laird finished first wrestling at 185 pounds. In the quarterfinal, Laird won a 1-0 decision against Hannah Monroe from Valier. Then in the semifinal, Laird won a 5-4 decision against Opal Brannon from Eureka. In the first-place match, Laird pinned Beatrice Kipp from Browning.

“Her improvement over the last three seasons has just been great,” LaSalle said about Laird. “She really likes the sport. She’s always asking questions and willing to learn, so seeing her get on top of the podium was big.”

At 235 pounds, Aliyah Stiffarm finished second. In the quarterfinal, Stiffarm pinned Boston Howell from Flathead. Then in the semifinal, Stiffarm pinned Kitalla Wise from Great Falls CMR.

Aubree Erickson finished fourth wrestling at 145 pounds in the tournament. She started the tournament with a pin against Samantha Larson from Columbia Falls. Then in a pair of consolation matches, Erickson pinned Isabelle Brewer from Flathead and Joss Salois from Browning. She then pinned Jalyssa Beach from Lake City 43 seconds into another consolation match.

McKenna Caplette finished fifth wrestling at 114 pounds. She started her run with a pin against Corrissa Baker from East Helena. Then in a pair of consolation matches, McKenna pinned Kaylei Hinck from Helena High and Baker. In the fifth-place match, McKenna pinned Arabella Nichols from Great Falls CMR.

At 126 pounds, Maleigha Azure took sixth for the Ponies. She started the tournament with pins against Macey McIlhargey from Flathead and Peyton Walker from Flathead. Then in a pair of consolation matches, Azure pinned RyAnn Lewis from Eureka and Walker.

At 185 pounds, Angelina Caplette finished sixth. In a consolation match, Angelina pinned Camas Brown-Fortin from Columbia Falls.

The Ponies now just have two more weekends before the postseason begins in February. With little time remaining before the most important portion of the season, LaSalle believes the Ponies are heading in the right direction.

“I think we’re on the right track. I think we’ve shown that we’ve improved every week and that’s what we’re looking for,” LaSalle said. “I think we’re capable of more and the kids know that. We’re going to keep pushing until we get there and be peaking at the right time at the end of the year.”

The HHS wrestling teams will next compete in a dual at Great Falls High this Tuesday.
