Carroll womens, Tech mens basketball wins Frontier Conference Championships

On Tuesday night at the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena, the Frontier Conference Tournaments wrapped up with their championship games. On the women’s side, Carroll College pulled out a 53-47 victory over Montana Western to secure the Frontier Conference Championship. On the men’s side, Montana Tech defeated the University of Providence, 103-95, to win the Frontier Conference.

In the women’s championship game, the Fighting Saints and Bulldogs went back and forth. It was a tight game in the first quarter as the Saints only had an 18-17 lead to end the frame. But the Bulldogs responded to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.

It continued to be a close game in the second half as the Bulldogs only had a 38-37 lead to end the third quarter. But the Saints took control in the fourth quarter to pull away and win the Frontier Conference.

The Saints finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field and they went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Jamie Pickens led the way with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Sienna Swannack scored 11 points for the Saints on 4-for-8 shooting.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs shot 34 percent from the field and they went 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. Brynly Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 14 points on 4-for-15 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line.

The Orediggers and Argonauts went back and forth throughout the men’s championship game. Neither team could be stopped as the Orediggers took a 62-55 lead into halftime. The second half was lower scoring, but plenty of points were still scored. At the end of the night, the Orediggers outlasted the Argos to win the conference championship.

The Orediggers finished the game shooting 62.1 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from deep. Asa Williams led the way with 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 5-for-8 shooting from deep. Caleb Bellach added 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting.

In the loss, the Argos shot 43.2 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from deep. The Argos also went 16-for-19 at the free-throw line. Marcus Stephens led the Argos with 22 points on 7-for-20 shooting from the field and 4-for-10 shooting from deep. Davien Harris-Williams also had a strong game with 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field and 4-for-10 shooting from deep.

With their wins, the Carroll College women’s basketball team and the Montana Tech men’s basketball teams each clinched berths in the NAIA Basketball Tournaments later this month.
