Skylights sign transfer McKenzie Long from Walla Walla CC

It’s recruiting season. And Montana State University-Northern women's basketball coach Chris Mouat has announced the signing of McKenzie Long to join the Skylight program next fall.

Long, a 5-foot-8 guard from American Falls, Idaho, recently finished a two-year junior college career at Walla Walla Community College.

Long is a 2021 graduate of American Falls High School, where she was a three-sport standout. She was a four-year varsity soccer player, earning all-conference honors three times, including first-team honors as a senior. In track and field, Long finished in fourth place at the state meet in the long jump and her relay team finished in sixth place.

On the basketball court, Long was a four-year varsity player for the Beavers and a two-year starter. As a junior she was named second team all-conference, and as a senior she was a first team all-conference selection.

Long carried a 3.9 grade point average and was a member of the National Honor Society as well as class secretary at American Falls High School.

“McKenzie is a great addition for us,” said Mouat. “She is a proven shooter from the 3-point line, and can score at all three levels. She has had a great career at Walla Walla and helped them to the NWAC East Region title this season.”

At Walla Walla Community College, Long was a first-team all-region selection this season. She averaged 13.9 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. She connected on 70 three-point field goals in 2022-2023, and had a season-high 26 points against Lane Community College. Long finished the season at number 11 in Northwest Athletic Conference scoring.

“McKenzie was the first offer we made this season,” Mouat added. “She will bring a lot to our program at both ends of the floor, and we believe her future is very bright in a Skylight uniform. Coming from Walla Walla, I know she has been very well-coached, as Bobbi Hazeltine is as good as it gets. McKenzie has the ability to make an immediate impact on our program.”

Long is the daughter of G.R. and Kelli Long. She carried a 3.6 grade point average at Walla Walla, and plans on majoring in Integrated Health Science at MSU-Northern.
