Sugarbeeters win the District 9C girls track meet

At the Havre Middle School Track Wednesday, the postseason began with the District 9C track and field meet. In the girls meet, many athletes performed well in a tight finish between the top three teams. But at the end of the day, Chinook scored 110 total points to win the girls' meet.

"They put in some really good performances," Chinook head coach Kendall Harwood said.

In the distance runs, Chinook's Anna Terry took first in the 1,600-meter dash and she took first in the 3,200-meter dash. She recorded a time of 5:46.36 in the 1,600 and she recorded a time of 12:54.72 in the 3,200. She also took third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:34.78.

Fellow Sugarbeeter Hallie Neibauer ran well as she took first in the 800 with a time of 2:30.63 and she took second in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 1:03.50. Her teammate Alexus Seymour took second in the 800 with a time of 2:33.14 and she took second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:57.71.

In the 3,200, Chinook's Neva Lowe took second with a time of 13:17.96. In the shot put, her teammate Hannah Schoen took second with a distance of 30-04. In the 400 relay, the Chinook team of Neibauer, Emma Klingaman, Sasha Gallus and Cheyenne Weigand took second with a time of 55.38. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Seymour, Klingaman, Neibauer and Kirbey Hofeldt took third with a time of 4:53.38.

Big Sandy came in a close second with 107 total points as the Pioneers did well across several events. Eva Yeadon took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.92 and she took third in the high jump with a measurement of 4-10. She also took third in the javelin with a distance of 101-05.

Big Sandy's Malaysia Baumann took second in the triple jump with a measurement of 32-05.75 and her teammate Keira Galbavy took second in the javelin with a distance of 103-09. Jaihven Baumann had a strong day as she took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.01 and she tied for third in the triple jump with a measurement of 31-10.5. She also took third in the long jump with a measurement of 15-03.5.

In the 1,600-meter dash, Pioneer Alex Worrall took third with a time of 6:01.38. Her teammate Brianna Terry took third in the discus with a distance of 86-11.

The Pioneers also ran well in the relay events. In the 1,600 relay, the Big Sandy team of Yeadon, Angela Sant, Jenny Sant and Mattie Gasvoda took second with a time of 4:39.86. In the 400 relay, the team of Gasvoda, Yeadon, Kaya Demontiney and Carmen Tan took third with a time of 55.81.

Fort Benton came in a close third with 106 total points thanks to several strong performances. Etta Wicks took first in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 13.34 and she took first in the long jump with a measurement of 15-08. As the Longhorns began the postseason, Wicks believes she and the rest of her team rose to the occasion.

"I think we've done pretty well for what we came out to do," Wicks said.

Her teammate Emerson Giese took first in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 28.50 and she took second in the long jump with a measurement of 15-04.75. Angeline Riener had a strong day as she took first in the high jump with a measurement of 5-01 and she took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.55.

Kylynn Nack had a strong start to the postseason as she took first in the pole vault with a measurement of 7-06 and she took third in the shot put with a distance of 27-09.

The Longhorns also ran well in the relay events as they took first in both the 400 and the 1,600 relays. In the 400 relay, the team of Giese, Riener, Wicks and Sarah Clark posted a time of 54.20. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Wicks, Clark, Riener and Giese recorded a finish of 4:29.77.

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks took fourth in the meet with 91 total points. CJI's Brie Mattson had a strong day as she took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.43 and she took second in the 100 with a time of 13.88. She also took third in the 200 with a time of 29.24 and she tied for third in the triple jump with a measurement of 31-10.5.

Fellow Hawk Jayla Ramberg performed well as she took first in the triple jump with a measurement of 33-03.75 and she took third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.00. CJI's Brynn Kammerzell took second in the high jump with a measurement of 4-10 and her teammate Tara Carter took third in the 3,200 with a time of 14:16.90.

North Star scored 62 total points to finish fifth in the meet. Rainee Watson had a strong start to the postseason as she took first in the discus with a distance of 101-03 and she took first in the javelin with a distance of 113-00. She also tied for second in the pole vault with a measurement of 6-00.

Fellow Knight Kaytlyn Domire also had a strong day as she took first in the shot put with a distance of 32-01 and she took second in the discus with a distance of 98-10. Her teammate Quinn Trueax tied for second in the pole vault with a measurement of 6-00.

Turner finished sixth in the meet with 42 total points. Bridget Reed had a strong day for the Tornadoes as she placed high in several events. She took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.76 and she took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.96. She took second in the 200 with a time of 28.56 and she took third in the 100 with a time of 13.93. She also took third in the 400 with a time of 1:03.87.

Hays-Lodge Pole took seventh in the meet with three total points and Box Elder came in behind it with two total points.

The top five finishes in each of these events will now advance to the Northern C Divisional Track Meet in Great Falls next week. Even those who did not place in the top five might still advance as at-large bids. As these athletes get another chance to compete this season, they hope to perform well in order to advance to state.

"I'm going to try my best," Wicks said. "I know there will be good competition out there so I hope to PR."

The Northern C Divisional Track and Field Meet will begin in Great Falls May 18.
