Havre High wins at Shelby speech tournament

Press release

Havre High School took a small team of speakers and debaters to a tournament at Shelby Saturday, with the Havre team performing well and winning the Class A team trophy.

Havre won with 29 points, while Bigfork High School took second with 15 points and Browning came in third with 9.

Sophomore Lyvia Little led the way for the Blue Ponies with a perfect 3-0 record and a first-place finish in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Teammate Trinity Olsen was just behind in Lincoln-Douglas, notching a third-place rank with a 1-2 finish.

In impromptu, sophomore Paige Anderson made a strong showing, breaking into finals and ending in third place.

Freshmen Malachi Morris and Ishaan Vikas also scored points for Havre in impromptu. The two switched from their normal policy debate to try impromptu at Shelby, both breaking into finals with Morris taking seventh and Vikas placing eighth.

Senior Carinna Kline broke into finals in informative speaking and scored well, ending up in fifth place in her event.

Havre next travels to Lewistown for the Fergus High School invitational Saturday, the last tournament before divisionals.

"The Shelby tournament was a great warmup coming off the Christmas break, and our kids really did well," head coach Tim Leeds said. "This meet in Lewistown should be great practice going into divisionals, too. It looks like it's going to be a really big tournament."
