  • Montana Drinks - Lots of booze in Havre

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Jan 5, 2015

Havre has an unbalanced number of bars, according to the state, and knows how to use them. Since many of the establishments and licenses in Havre were established before the laws changed to limit the number of licenses an area may have, many of the licenses are grandfathered in. Havre has 21 liquor licenses within its city limits - or 12 mor...

  • Celebrating History: Historic buildings: Ice houses to courthouses

    Updated Jan 2, 2015

Emily Mayer It is no secret that I love old buildings. I truly enjoy researching the history of Hill County's old buildings, photographing them and sharing the information with others. With the exception of four years, I have always lived in an old house, though not necessarily designated as historic. Living in and rehabilitating old buildings is very satisfying for me, and I'm lucky to have found my passion and my calling in life. I am also fortunate to have worked in several...

  • GOP: Person-to-person contact bringing victories in elections

    John Kelleher|Updated Jan 2, 2015

In late October, Republican Bruce Meyers was going door to door on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation looking for votes in his seemingly uphill effort to get elected to the Montana House in a district that includes Rocky Boy, Fort Belknap and some surrounding farms and ranches. "They thought I was trick-or-treating," Meyers recalls with a laugh. People offered him candy. Candidates had never gone door to door in Rocky Boy, he said. Democrats always assumed they would win. The tact...

  • View from the North 40

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 2, 2015

Mommas, don’t let your babies grow up to love horses — sure, it sounds like a catchy country tune, but really, don’t. Just don’t. Horse people say things about loving horses — how they’re passionate about them, or how horses speak to their soul — but really it’s an illness, an addiction without a ribbon to help garner awareness or support for this tragic disorder of character. Given the least chance, horse people talk about horses almost as much as they think about them: inces...

Enduring taunts from his classmates, his biggest desire is to be accepted for who he is and not for his looks. “Wonder” is a page turner filled with...

  • Pastor's Corner: Holiday, and year-round, exchanges

    Updated Jan 2, 2015

By Brian and Vicki Barrows Do you work in retail? If so, you’ve just completed your busiest time of the year, right? From the retailer’s perspective an exchange is better than a refund, because inventory still goes out the door, and money stays in the till. Actually, many customers prefer an exchange, as well, because they go home with something they selected, so they know it fits and is a color they like, for exa...
