  • Rehberg touts passage of payroll tax, pipeline bill

    Tim Leeds

Montana's sole U. S. representative praised the House passage of a bill that includes his requirement that a decision be made within 60 days on issuing a permit for an oil pipeline. But his opponent in the 2012 Senate election criticized tying the issue to the deadline-driven issue of extending a payroll tax holiday. Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., said in a press release Tuesday that the Senate should follow suit in passing the legislation, which requires a decision on issuing a permit on the Keystone XL pipeline that would... Full story

But when the sun goes down and the lights go on, or in the Montana Grizzlies' case, go up, the dynamic that is Montana football seems to reach even higher levels. Known as one of the loudest football stadiums in all of college football, regardless of its size, the atmosphere at Wash-Griz has never been called into question. It's a one-of-kind, unique situation where the fans are rabid, t...

She also knew what it was like to play basketball in Havre long before she stepped foot on the MSU-N campus in the fall of 2010. Denham's M-Ettes have a long-standing rivalry with the Havre Blue Ponies, and she says the Havre community is what...

  • Christmas more than just fun

    Tristan

Editor: Christmas! Bows, bells, trees, gifts, food, family, friends. We all enjoy these things, but Christmas is so much more than that. It is a babe in a manger, shepherds, a star, angels, praise, love. Christmas is God sharing His Son and His love for people. God is still in control of our world. There is still hope and joy and peace because the babe came. Let us thank God and praise Him for His gift to us — Jesus Christ, the Savior. Have a blessed Christmas. Martha Chambers Havre...

  • Supreme Court will hear health care case this term

    JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Monday it will hear arguments next March over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, accepting a case that could rival the historic Bush v. Gore ruling in shaking the political landscape. The decision to hear arguments in the spring allows plenty of time for a decision in late June, just over four months before Election Day. This sets up an election-year showdown over the White House's main domestic policy achievement. The justices announced they will hear more than five h...

    Zach White

Havre Daily News/Zach White Rick Dow, left, hands a donation to Mike Neubauer, founder of Branded By Fire Ministries. It may have been Rick Dow's victory last week, as he was elected to the Havre City Council, but he felt like spreading the joy, by donating the remainder of his campaign funds to local charities. • City seeks tree count

    Zach White

Havre may be one of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA's, but the city's Parks and Recreation Department feels the city and the trees have been a bit distant for the past several years, and it is applying for a grant to get better acquainted. At last week's Havre City Council meeting, the council approved a grant application for the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation's Urban Forestry Grant to conduct an inventory of the city's leafier residents. During the meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Chris... Full story

  • Hi-Line football championship hopes dashed

    Tim Leeds

It was a chilly weekend for many local sports fans over the weekend, not from the weather but from seeing playoff hopes end after strong seasons and early playoff results. The Havre High Blue Ponies, Chinook Sugarbeeters and Big Sandy Pioneers all were one game away from a shot at state championships. All lost their semifinals games. The same kind of result occurred on the college level, with the Montana State University-Northern Lights losing a close-fought game to conference rival Carroll College. In other college games,...

  • Honoring our veterans by creating jobs

    Sen. Jon Tester

I had the honor this week of introducing a jobs bill in the U.S. Senate that enjoyed a rare victory: overwhelming bipartisan support. The Senate passed my VOW to Hire Heroes Act with a vote of 94-1. It's a victory that belongs to the many Montanans who came to me with concerns over this nation's unacceptably high veterans' unemployment rate. SEN. JON TESTER The jobless rate, especially among younger veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, is getting worse. I consider it a national disgrace. Veterans deserve...

Don't widen chasm between rich, poor Editor: If you are concerned about our country's future, act now. By Nov. 23, Sen. Max Baucus and the other 11 members of the supercommittee must submit their proposals for reducing by $1.5 trillion the federal deficit. On the table for cuts is all that we love — national parks, schools, public safety and roads, libraries — and all the government programs that protect our most vulnerable neighbors — Medicaid, SSI, Meals on Wheels, subsidized housing. The result of cuts to our safety-net pr... Full story

  • Lawmakers uncertain on medical marijuana issue

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — Montana lawmakers said Monday they are uncertain whether they should come up with a backup plan should their crackdown on medical marijuana be struck down in the courts or rejected next year at the ballot box. The state's tough new medical marijuana law is under attack by the industry both in the courts and with an initiative asking voters to reject the new law at the ballot box in 2012. A legislative interim committee decided Monday that it will continue to monitor both before making any plans to draft backup l... Full story

  • House GOP leader Cantor says deficit deal likely

    DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sidestepping controversy, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., declined to take sides Monday on a proposal for higher tax revenues backed by fellow Republicans on Congress' supercommittee, yet expressed confidence the panel would agree on a deficit-reduction plan of at least $1.2 trillion by a Nov. 23 deadline. A proposal for $300 billion in higher taxes has stirred grumbling within the ranks of congressional Republicans, for whom opposition to such measures has been political bedrock for more than two...

  • ACLU: Judge shouldn't have dismissed same-sex suit

    Matt Volz

HELENA — A Montana judge abdicated his responsibility when he dismissed a lawsuit by six gay couples seeking the same legal benefits as married couples, the American Civil Liberties Union said Monday in an appeal to the state's highest court. The six couples, barred from marrying under the state's voter-approved constitutional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, aren't asking for the right to wed. Instead, they say they want to be able to make decisions like married couples about their families' health c...

  • Environmental law waiver faces northern skeptics

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — No one can recall the last time an illegal immigrant hiked into the rugged and remote wilderness of Glacier National Park in an attempt to slip into the U.S. But that isn't stopping some in Congress from proposing to give border agents control over environmental laws in protected areas such as the popular tourist attraction in Montana, Washington's North Cascades National Park and all federal land within 100 miles of the U.S. border. Associated Press interviews with northern border local sheriffs, federal o... Full story
