  • Letter to the Editor:

    Updated Mar 6, 2015

Editor: It wasn't all that long ago I was walking door to door, campaigning for Havre City Council. I was greeted by many with a smile and a thank-you. Others were curious if I was a Democrat or Republican. The remaining concerned citizens asked what I would do to address the streets. "Fix the streets" became the obvious campaign tag line. At that point, I was doing my best to appeal to the voters. Honestly, I had very little knowledge of the actual costs associated with such a massive project. I was unaware of how little...

    Updated Mar 6, 2015

Laurel The Havre Police Department is handing out free gun locks. The locks were paid for through a grant. Police Chief Gabe Matosich said most new guns have locks with them, but people tend to own lots of older guns, many without locks. The locks are meant to be kid-proof, because younger people tend to play with guns when they shouldn't. Now that you mention it, many adults do the same without having an excuse. The locks will save lives. Laurel Sunnyside Intermediate School looks pretty snazzy this week. The classroom...

  • View from the North 40: Can you screen me now?

    Pam Burke, Humor columnist|Updated Mar 6, 2015

Health screenings are meant to tell you, and others, important things about yourself, but really, I’m more than just a list of numbers on a page. Why just this week I took a 12-question quiz and found out that I am an “enlightened grammarian,” which means that I know proper grammar, but am accepting of the fact that language evolves with the times. I have “balanced the standardization of language with the practical usage.” That made my inner nerd feel awesome. Then came the...

    Emily Mayer|Updated Mar 6, 2015

Emily Mayer For the 10th installment of this series, Year of the Buildings, the debate goes on as to where the courthouse would be built. For much of his life, and in almost every step of his storied wrestling career, the way he was raised has paid off on the mat. It...

HAMILTON — The courtside announcer in the Hamilton High school gymnasium may not have been able to correctly pronounce Morgan Mazurkiewcz’s name at the start of the game — but by the end of it, she made sure he would never be able to forget it. The reason Mazurkiewicz’s name won’t soon be forgotten by that announcer, or Havre basketball fans, was performances like the one she had Thursday night in Hamilton, as the senior made 19-of-21 free throws and helped shoot the Havre...
