Marine Sgt. William Stacey was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Jan. 23, 2012. He was on his fourth tour of the war-torn country. Like many in the military, he had written a letter to be read only if was killed in action. Havre High School students were told at graduation ceremonies Sunday that they may travel away from home, but they will be Blue Ponies until they die, and they will always return home to Havre. In a rousing commencement address, Kathryn Holt, the high school librarian, said the class is unique because they are the sons and daughters of the Hi-Line. “Havre will always draw you back no matter how far you go away,” she said. She told the story of her son who graduated from Hav... Full story

  • The Pepin Mansion

    Emily Mayer|Updated May 28, 2013

The Pepin Mansion was one of Havre’s most unique and elegant edifices. Located at the southeast corner of Third Street and Fourth Avenue, it stood as a testimony to pioneer spirit and determination. Simon Pepin came to Havre during Fort Assinniboine days from St. Michel, Canada. He partnered with L. K. Devlin and secured a contract with the government to supply meat to the fort. He also befriended Ed Broadwater, and these men’s partnerships would prove beneficial to Hav... Full story

LAUREL — After the conclusion of yet another Class C state track and field meet, it should come as no surprise that many area athletes had another standout weekend of competition. A second consecutive girls’ state title was on the line for the North Star Knights. And while the milestone wasn’t reached, the Knights did help lead the way for the success found by the Hi-Line teams and individuals that competed Friday and Saturday in Laurel. Daniel Horton|Updated May 28, 2013

Weather has played a role in almost everything the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams have done this season. So it was no surprise that weather dominated the headlines of the 2013 Class A state tennis tournament. Eight Blue Pony netters were in Polson and Ronan over the weekend, and wound up competing in a wet, chilly and lengthy Class A state tennis tournament. The tournament got under way Thursday morning and didn’t wrap up until Saturday afternoon. And in between was p... Full story

  • Little folks can teach us a lesson

    John Kelleher|Updated May 28, 2013

Little Chazlie Cripps, 4 1/2, and Tristan Riggle, 6, gave me a lot of hope Monday morning. They were standing on the sidewalk awaiting the start of the annual Memorial Day services at the Hill County Courthouse. Tristan was in his little car, and Chazlie was passing out poppies to the crowd, a fundraising event to help area veterans. Chazlie’s grandma, Kim Cripps, and Tristan's grandpa, Keith Doll, were talking about how they can explain Memorial Day to kids that young. I... Full story

Last month, after the fire and explosion in West, Texas, and shortly after one of Texas Gov. The rain had stopped but there was still moisture in the air as the annual Memorial Day ceremonies began on the Hill County Courthouse lawn Monday morning. A crowd of people gathered, lining up on the flag-draped sidewalks that surround the building. Boy Scouts marched to the flagpole and while the crowd, many veterans, stood in silence, the flag was raised to half-staff by the Scouts, and Tom Baty, a Havre High music teacher, sang the national anthem.
