Havre boys capture Fergus Invitational

The Havre High golf team traveled to Lewistown on Friday afternoon and found success at Fergus High Invitational at the Judith Shadows Golf Club.

The Blue Pony boys team captured first place with a total score of 324 for the 18-hole event. A pair of CMR junior varsity teams came in second and third, and the host Eagles were fourth.

Havre High senior Trent Normandy captured medalist honors for the day after firing a round of 73. Ben Erickson finished in second place with a score of 76. Chazz Hurlburt added an 87 while Tony Jensen fired an 88. Ben Milam rounded out the scoring for the Ponies with a 95.

"The boys team did what I expected them to do," said Havre High head coach Keith Evenson. "Some of the kids didn't play as well as they would have liked, but in all I was pleased with their performance."

On the girls side, the Havre High team came in second place with a total score of 476. The tournament was won by the host team from Lewistown with a score of 451.

Alli Ward led the way for the Ponies with an 18-hole total of 108. Ward's 108 was good for fifth place individually.

Catlin Anderson finished with a 114 and Morgan Zimmer added a 119. Kim Bryson rounded out the scoring for Havre with a 135.

"This tournament was another good experience for our girls team," Evenson said. "We were short a player but it was good for the girls that were there to get some more tournament experience before we go to Helena."

In Helena the Ponies will be back up against the best of the best that Class AA golf has to offer. Today, the Ponies will play the Green Meadows Country Club and Tuesday they will play Bill Roberts Municipal Golf Course.

"It is really good for our team that we get invited to the Helena Invitational," Evenson said. "Our kids need to play against good competition and they really like to play nice golf courses."

"This tournament will be a good challenge for our boys team," Evenson added. "And it will also help our girls get more acquainted with tournament golf."

The Havre lineups won't change much on either side for the Helena tourney. Freshman Matt Hedstrom qualified for the fifth spot on the boys side and the girls team will remain the same with the exception of Brittany Job, who returns to the lineup after missing Friday's trip to Lewistown.

The Helena Invitational gets under way today at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at Green Meadows Country Club.
