With a pair of new players on the course, the Montana State University- Northern women's golf team made some headway in its second tournament of the fall season. The Skylights were in Helena on Monday and Tuesday for the Carroll College Invitational played at Green Meadows Golf Course, and with Skylights' basketball players Laramie Schwenke and Kaylee Shaw joining veterans Ali Ward and Danielle Dirden, as well as Ashley Lawson, MSU-N had a strong finish. As a team, the Skylights finished with a team score of 1,312 over the 54-hole tournament, good enough for sixth place out of nine teams entered. The Carroll tourney is considered one of the strongest of the fall events in the Frontier Conference. Rocky Mountain College captured the women's team title by strokes over Lewis-Clark State, and LC State's Madeline Jarrett took home medalist honors, beating RMC's Rachel Hosterman by four strokes. Individually, the Skylights were paced by Ward, who finished 17th overall. Ward finished with a 277 and her best round was her opening round where she fired an even 90. Dirden finished 29th overall with a 328. The Harlem native posted her best score during the second round where she shot 106. In their golfing debut, the Skylights got a 31st place finish from Schwenke (332) and a 38th place finish from Shaw (378) . Lawson (390) came in right behind Shaw in 39th place. On the men's side. LC State ran away with the team title, while RMC's Kevin Oden shot a 2-under-par 214 to earn medalist honors. Former Havre High golfer Brandon Job finished at 230 for the tournament after firing rounds of 76, 75 and 79 for UM-Western. Job finished 20th overall. The Skylights and the rest of the Frontier Conference will be at Peter Yegen Golf Course in Billings for the Rocky Mountain Invitational Sept. 28-29. The RMC tourney is the final event of the fall season.
