John Shennum Jr.

John Shennum Jr., 83 went to be with the Lord on Oct. 11, 2010, at his home with his children at his side.

Memorial services were held on Oct. 16, 2010, at the Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Charlie Moody officiating.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.

John was born on Aug. 24, 1927, in Scobey to John and Adella (Judkins) Shennum. He was the sixth of seven children. He attended the Shennum Rural School for his first two years and continued his education in Scobey Public Schools.

He was raised on the family farm 21 miles northwest of Scobey. John was very much a horseman and was sad to see the transition from horse to tractor.

Later in life, his passion for horses became a reality when he started his own business of breeding and raising Arabian horses.

John joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and after training was sent to duty at an atomic bomb site in White Sands, N.M.

John met Rose Nickola while stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, where they were married in 1947.

John and Rose raised five children, Barbara, David, Lois, Jody and John III.

They returned to Scobey to live on the farm. John was self-educated as an electrical engineer. He worked for REA and followed that career path to become a partner of Heberly Engineering firm in Havre. John loved the Lord, family and friends. His special interests included horses, boxing, playing guitar, music, classic western movies and flying.

John was a pilot in his younger years and owned his own plane. John was loving, intelligent, talented, a great provider at all stages of his life and had a sense of humor, tempered with wit!

John loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a born-again Christian and a faithful Bible reader.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Adella Shennum; his brothers, Joe, Jim and Harry; his sisters, Pearl and Ruth; his daughter, Jody; and his grandson Shea.

John is survived by his sons, David (Carole) Shennum of Fort Lupton, Colo. and John Shennum III of Havre, Mont.; his daughters, Barbara Shennum of Brighton, Colo., and Lois (Bruce Hoover) Pomeroy of Havre, Mont.; his brother, Ben (Christine) Shennum of Anchorage, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews. John will be greatly missed by his family and friends!

"See you in heaven, Dad!" Love, your children Barbara, David, Lois and John.
