Local Republicans mixed on using referendums

A report that some Republicans are considering bypassing the governor by using referendums to send issues to the voters received mixed reviews from Havre-area legislators.

The Associated Press reported last week that some Republicans are considering the tactic in order to avoid a gubernatorial veto on some issues. While the Republicans will control the Senate and the House in 2011, there aren't enough Republicans in the Senate to override a veto by Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer.
