Gold coin dropped in Mont. Salvation Army kettle

BILLINGS (AP) — A Salvation Army official in Montana says someone dropped a gold coin worth $1,350 into one of the organization's kettles.

Maj. Kevin Jackson says workers found the gold piece Thursday night while counting donations at the group's office in Billings.

Jackson says he took the coin to Ardie Halvorson of Ardie's Coins in Billings on Friday and sold it for $1,350.

Halvorson says the coin was minted in 1986 and is a 1-ounce reproduction of the $50 American Eagle coin.

Jackson tells the Billings Gazette he doesn't know who dropped off the coin or what kettle it was dropped in.
