Montana State students to vote on tobacco ban

BOZEMAN — Students at Montana State are scheduled to vote Tuesday and Wednesday on whether to ban tobacco on the Bozeman campus.

The Daily Chronicle reports that the referendum to make the campus tobacco-free within two years isn't binding on MSU President Waded Cruzado, but could have significant influence on the future of smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco at Montana State.

Eric Fisher is the outgoing president of the Associated Students of MSU.

He says student senators discussed the idea for several years but never reached an agreement.

He says they finally decided to have students vote on it.

The university currently bans smoking indoors and within 25 feet of buildings, but students say the 25-foot rule isn't enforced.
