Havre High student, Triangle to be honored

Havre High School student Lauren Scofield and her family and Triangle Communications will receive the 2011 Environmental Heroes Award from Recycle Hi-Line.

They have been selected because of their concern for the environment and for recycling, said Candi Zion, Recycle Hi-Line chair.

The awards will be presented at the Havre City Council meeting on Monday, May 2, Zion said.

Scofield recently organized the Runway to Recycle fashion show, which featured environmentally friendly fashions.

Scofield is Miss Teen Earth of Hill County.

"She taught us all how we can make something beautifully out of recycled materials," Zion said.

"One of the participants made a purse out of shredded can lids," Zion said.

Scofield's entire family is being honored because they helped her in her efforts, Zion said.

"Lauren is a really unique person who really cares about the community," she said. "She favors a green initiative on the Hi-Line."

Triangle Communications is being honored because it has been involved in a series of green projects.

"The people at Triangle have been good at recycling phone books and CFL light bulbs," she said.

"They have been good at spreading the word about recycling, and they have been good at recycling (for) themselves," she said.

Triangle officials have also been good at keeping Recycle Hi-Line officials aware of when and where grants are available.

Although the Environmental Hero awards won't officially be handed out until May 2, the announcement is being made today because it is Earth Day, Zion said. Today was officially declared Earth Day be Mayor Tim Solomon and Hill County commissioners.

The Hero award recipients haven't been told they are winners, Zion said.

"They will read it in the newspaper," she said.
