Breaking Sports: Blue Ponies edge Libby

Havre High's Thurman Holdsclaw fights for yards during Friday night's Class A football game between HHS and Libby at Blue Pony Stadium.

The Havre High football team captured its third win of the 2012 season, and the Ponies did it with defense and a strong effort by senior Thurman Holdsclaw. On Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium, HHS held on to defeat the Libby Loggers 27-21 in a Class A nonconference football game.

Holdsclaw took advanatge of a big night on the ground, while freshman quarterback Dane Warp threw four touchdown passes. Warp twice hooked up with Holdsclaw for scores, as well as once with Thomas Gruber and the game-clicnher to Zach Plum in the third quarter. Libby crept to 14-13 late in the first half, and the Loggers cut into a 27-13 HHS lead with only a few minutes left in the fourth. But Havre's defense stayed strong right to the end and held off several Libby hail mary passes at the end. The Ponies also intercepted Libby three times, with Plum, Gruber and Chet Shrauger each picking off passes.

With the win, the Ponies improved to 3-4 on the season, and they can clinch a Class A playoff berth with a win over Browning next Friday night in Havre.
