Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: A wild start to 6C season

If the first major weekend of high school volleyball is any indication, it's going to be a wild two months, especially in the District 6C.

League play got underway on Thursday night as Chinook took down Big Sandy in four games. The Sugarbeeters beat the Pioneers by scores of 27-25, 27-25, 16-25 and 25-21 in a tightly contested match.

Madison McCann had six kills and 17 digs to lead the Beeters. Paige Moxley added five kills and 19 digs, while Makhayla Farmer also totaled five kills and three aces. The Pioneers got seven kills and six digs from Kaylie Gilman, while Molly Herron served five aces.

The 6C action continued on Friday night as league favorite North Star defeated Hays-Lodge Pole twice in Hays.

In the first match, North Star beat the Thunderbirds by scores of 25-8, 25-22 and 25-16, with Lisa Carlon totaling five kills and five aces to lead the way. In the second match, the Knights beat the T-Birds by scores of 25-12, 25-6 and 25-19. Kassidy Hansen tallied six kills and Bettie Carlon served three aces for the Knights.

But as good as the Knights were on Friday, things changed on Saturday night as they returned home, only to drop a four-set match at the hands of the Pioneers. Big Sandy defeated North Star by scores of 16-25, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-21.

Herron totaled seven kills in the win, while Kylie Cline served five aces and Kaylie Gilman had nine digs. Brooke Leader directed the Big Sandy offense, which rallied from a 1-0 deficit, with 16 assists. North Star got eight kills from Lisa Carlon, while Bettie Carlon totaled seven assists.

Meanwhile, the Chester/J-I Hawks renewed a budding rivalry with Chinook on Saturday night, in what turned out to be a dramatic, five-set thriller. The Hawks turned the Beeters away by scores of 25-17, 20-25, 15-25, 25-21 and 15-12. C/J-I fought back from a 2-1 lead and also had to come from behind early in the fifth set for the win.

Brittnee Theel had a big night for the Hawks, totaling 13 kills and nine aces. Kate Graff added six aces of her own to go along with seven kills, 12 digs and three blocks, and Denerey Haaland put up 19 digs. The Beeters got a match-high 17 kills from Paige Moxley, to go along with three aces, while Makhayla Farmer had a big match, totaling 12 kills, right aces and all six of Chinook's stuff blocks.
