Cal Wearley set for Wednesday

Every year the North Star Knights and many of North Central Montana's best track and field program's take over the Havre Middle School track for the annual Cal Wearley track meet.

And it is that time of year again, and a lot of talented and competitive teams are expected to make the Havre track infield their home.

North Star's Cooper Spicher flies through the air during the long jump at last spring's Cal Wearley Invitational track meet in Havre. The Knights will host the annual Cal Wearley Meet Wednesday morning at the Havre Middle School Track, with over 30 teams expected to attend.

ams will be in Havre for the annual meet, one of the more respected, and consistently competitive meets in the state. The field events will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the running events will begin at 9 a.m.

Expected to make the trip to Havre this year is Augusta, Belt, Big Sandy, Box Elder, Cascade, Chinook, Choteau, Chester/J-I, Cut Bank, Denton, Fairfield, Fort Benton, Glasgow, Great Falls Central, Hays-Lodge Pole, Highwood, Hinsdale, Malta, Moore, Nashua, North Star, Rocky Boy, Roy-Winifred, Simms, Stanford-Geyser, Sunburst, Turner, Valier and Whitewater. The Class A Havre Blue Ponies will also compete on Wednesday.

And while most of the competition comes from Class C or Class B programs, the competitors can expect to be tested at a very high level.

Last year the North Star girls program won the team title at the state meet, but also kicked their season off with a Cal Wearley win. They are expected to lead the way again with a lot of returning talent. The Chinook girls will also be near the top of the pack, as they finished fourth a year ago. On the boys side of things, Chinook will also be a team to watch, as they finished in fifth last season.

The Cal Wearly is the perfect launch pad for any team who can make the trip.

Top times and performers are typically names that are known across the state. And if an athlete can place near the top in the Cal Wearley field of teams, they could expect to have a pretty solid season.

Wednesday's meet will kick off a lot of the 2013 season for may athletes. But first meet or not, it is going to take a team's best effort if they hope to have a successful day, and place amongst the top teams in attendance.

The Cal Wearley field events will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the running events will begin at 9 a.m. All the action takes place at the HMS Track in Havre.
