Havre High girls take Cal Wearly title

With the new track and field season still in the early stages, a lot of prep girls got some extra work Wednesday.

North Star hosted the annual Cal Wearly track meet at the Havre Middle School track, and a ton of area talent made the trip. The Havre High Blue Ponies earned a No. 1 team finish on their home track, and did so with 82 points. Class B Malta finished second with 65, and the host team, the Class C North Star Knights finished in third with 62.

Chinook also finished close to the top of the pack with 58 points, while Turner had 16, Big Sandy had 13 and Chester/J-I finished with 11.

Havre did its damage in seven individual events, and both relays. The Ponies got No. 1 finishes by Haley Ohm in the 1,600-meters with a time of 6:06.4, and by Lacey Waid in the pole vault, clearing 10-0. Rachel David also ran a 1:07.14 in the 400 and Ohm ran a 2:59.7 in the 3,200 for a couple of second-place finishes, while Martha Stocker had a throw of 32-09 for a second-place finish in the shot put. Peyton Filius had two third-place finishes as well. Filius ran a 1:05.64 in the 400 and a 2:35. 3 in the 80. Naomi Terry also finished fourth in the long jump (14-06), and Ceyara Plante finished sixth in the triple jump (31-0). The 4x100 relay team finished second with a time of 55.7, but the 4x400 relay team finished No. 1 with a time of 4:40.1.

“Those first-place finishes are great,” Havre High head coach John Ita said. “And everybody is looking for the here and the now, but I am looking down the road too. Three or four years from now, when our freshman and sophomores are juniors and seniors we will have another batch of top finishers. Seeing young kids get a personal record now keeps pushing them to compete, and seeing kids finish in first place gets me excited for the future too.”

North Star also had a nice showing in their second weekend of action as they scored points across the board. In the 100, the Knights had three top finishers. Bettie Carlon was second (13.2), while Tylynn Rettig was third (13.3), and Mackenzie Hansen finished sixth (13.7). Rettig also finished fourth in the 200-with a time of 28.5, while also finishing second in the pole vault with a height of 8-6. Carlon finished second in the long jump with a distance of 15-08, and second in the triple jump with a distance of 34-05. Sierra Yanny finished fifth in the pole vault (7-6), and Whitney Wendland finished fifth in the discus (88-06), while the 4x100 relay team was first (54.6) and the 4x400 relay team was third (57.0).

“Anytime you can compete against that many teams,” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. “You are going to go up against good competition. But with our girls, we talked about pushing our limits and I think we did that. We were able to come through and work through some mental things, as well as work on our strength, agility, and quickness. All that looked good today, but we haven’t worked on our 400-meter endurance, and I think that showed on the track as well.”

Shot put was a good event for the Chinook Sugarbeeters with three girls placing. Tavin Schneider and Britney Nelson tied for fourth with throws of 31-10, and Makhayla Farmer finished fifth with a throw of 31-09. But the discus and javelin were also profitable. Nelson finished second in the discus (103-09) and fourth in the javelin (95-06). Farmer finished fifth in the javelin (94-03). Kailey Kleinjan paced the Beeters in the sprints. Kleinjan took first in the 100 with a time of 13.1 seconds and first in the 200-with a time of 28.2 seconds. And Emily Dennis had a great day in the jumps to help lead the way as well. Dennis finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4-06, and fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 31-04. Katelyn Neibauer also took fifth in the 200-meter (29.2) and Taylor Neibauer took sixth in the 300 hurdles (53.8), while the short relay was fourth (57.0) and the long relay was fifth (no time reported).

Two girls gave Turner its 16 points, as Ella Billmayer placed third in the 1600-meter (6:17.8), and third in the 3200-meter (13:12.9), and Lyndsay Hutton placed fourth in the discus (94-09). Big Sandy was paced by Molly Herron and Maddy Reichelt. Herron finished second in the 200-meter (28.4) and sixth in the 400-meter (1:08.1). And Reichelt finished sixth in the 1600-meter (6:30.9) and fifth in the 3200-meter (13:46.6). Lisa Pegar took sixth in the 200 with a time of 30.1. The Chester/J-I Hawks got their points from Allix Goldhahn in three events. Goldhahn finished the 100 hurdles in third (18.0), the 300 hurdles in fourth (53.1), and the high jump in sixth (4-04).
